Role – CSU Brussels_Database MySQL Assistant
Key Duties & Responsibilities
MySQL Operations & Administration
- Install, configure, maintain, patch, and upgrade MySQL (8.0+) instances (standalone and clustered).
- Perform routine DBA maintenance: schema housekeeping, index/statistics maintenance, and data retention support.
- Manage users, roles, privileges, and authentication following least-privilege principles.
- Ensure environment consistency across DEV/UAT/PROD.
- Manage storage growth, capacity planning, partitioning, and archiving strategies.
Performance & Optimization
- Analyze and optimize database performance using MySQL tools and logs (slow query log, performance_schema, EXPLAIN / EXPLAIN ANALYZE).
- Design and implement indexing strategies and approved schema changes.
- Tune MySQL/InnoDB parameters (buffer pool, redo logs, I/O, connections, temp tables).
- Identify and resolve locking issues, deadlocks, replication lag, and inefficient query patterns.
Availability, Backup & Disaster Recovery
- Design and operate backup strategies (logical/physical backups, binlogs, encryption where required).
- Execute and document regular restore tests to validate RPO/RTO objectives.
Security & Compliance
- Apply MySQL hardening and security standards (TLS in transit, encryption at rest where supported, restricted access).
- Manage patching and upgrades with risk/impact assessment and change planning.
- Support audits and compliance activities (access reviews, logging, evidence collection).
Monitoring & Incident Management
- Implement and maintain monitoring and alerting (e.g. PMM, Prometheus/Grafana).
- Define alert thresholds and reduce alert noise.
- Provide incident triage, resolution, and root cause analysis within agreed SLAs.
- Produce corrective and preventive actions for major incidents.
- Maintain operational documentation (backup/restore, failover, replication, performance issues).
Required Skills & Experience
Technical Skills
- Strong MySQL administration experience (preferably 8.0+).
- Advanced SQL tuning, indexing, and execution plan analysis.
- Expert backup/restore and point-in-time recovery (mysqldump, mysqlpump, Percona XtraBackup or equivalent).
- Solid Linux fundamentals (CPU, memory, I/O, filesystems, networking).
- Database security best practices (TLS, privilege management, auditing, secure configs).
- Knowledge of at least one additional DB technology (PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server).
- Automation/SRE mindset with scripting (Bash, Python, Perl).
Experience
- Minimum 5+ years hands-on MySQL DBA experience in production environments.
- Proven support of business-critical systems with defined SLAs.
- Demonstrated expertise in performance troubleshooting and incident handling.
